Before I begin stitching I like to take note of straight guide lines that I can add to the chart. Guide lines like these are especially helpful, at least to me, as I stitch to ensure that I am correctly following the design and my various objects (border, mums, acorns) are position correctly to each other.

Note none of these red color guide lines are to be stitched.

As I have listed them below, I stitched the border first then the mums and acorns, doing the center Rhodes Stitch last.

Section 2 – The Border

If you want a close trimmed hardanger style edge (as shown in the photo) use the buttonhole stitch. For my stitching thread I normally use a DMC or Anchor size 5 perle. I am left handed an I have found that for a crisp buttonhole edge that I have to stitch going counter clockwise. My guess is that this has to do with the twist of the thread, in that working left handed I slightly loosen the twist of the stitching thread as I work the needle which makes my buttonhole edge look uneven.

Section 3 – The Mums and Acorns

The mums and acorns are repeating patterns. Stitch used is cross stitch over two fabric threads.

I stitched each acorn exactly the same, but now and then on the mums I decreased or increased the number of cross stitches along the flower’s edge just to kind of break up an overall cookie cutter look. But none of the longest column lengths of my stitched cross stitch go pass the longest column length on the chart.

Oh, do I enjoy looking about the web and in books for variations on the Rhodes Stitch. They add a nice 3-dimensional element to your needlework.

To create this Rhodes Stitch you come up at position 1, down at position 2. Up at position 3 and down at position 4  and continue until the final stitch where you come up at 31 and down at 32.   This pattern creates diagonal stitches that form four fan shaped sections
